What is Balanced Choices?
- A Chartwells’ program designed to identify “better-for-you” food choices
- Promotes snacks, beverages and complete meals that meet precise nutrition parameters endorsing healthy eating guidelines and appropriate portion sizes
- Teaches students how to make healthy food choices while on the school campus as well as outside of school
Why Balanced Choices?
- Increases the availability of healthier options at mealtime.

- The prevalence of lifestyle chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure has substantially increased over the past decade.
- Only 3% of all Americans meet four (4) out of the five (5) recommendations for the intake of grains, fruits, vegetables, milk products and meat and bean food groups, as described by the MyPyramid food guidance system (pictured right.)
- Those with unhealthy eating habits during childhood, tend to maintain those habits into adulthood.
How Does The Balanced Choices Program Work?
- Snacks, beverages and complete meals that meet the nutritional standards will be identified on the serving line, and cafeteria managed snack bars and vending machines.
- Foods eligible for the program will be identified with labels, stickers and tags that contain the Balanced Choices logo (pictured right.)
