READING TIPS FOR PARENTS

  • Read with your child every day and have fun.  Discuss the story.  You will also be building your child’s vocabulary.  Most importantly, you will help your child enjoy reading.  A parent’s example is the most powerful teacher of all
  • Create a special place to read free from distractions
  • Choose books carefully if you are asking your child to read to you.  Be patient as you help your child practice reading.
  • Take turns.  You read a line or a short page.  Have your child echo back the page to practice expression and fluency.
  • Reread favorites.  Read it again and again.  This will help build your child’s confidence and help him/her improve.
  • Key into your child’s interests.  You can have them choose topics that he/she wants to learn more about.  You can read books above their instructional level to create an interest and love of books.
  • Give positive feedback for the many small improvements your child is making.  This will help create confidence and encourage your child to continue to take risks to learn new skills.
