123Third Grade  Fall Newsletter
Text Box: Welcome Third graders have gotten off to a terrific start. We have spent time getting to know one another and sharing our interests through games and activities. We have practiced classroom procedures and even developed our own set of class rules to follow. The children have gotten used to using our homework journal/student planner. It is a great communication tool between home and school. Book Orders The children have the opportunity to order books from Scholastic on a monthly basis. It is a great way to buy books at a reasonable cost. They really love to receive their brand new books in class. Please be sure to fill out the form with your child’s name and to make checks payable to Scholastic Books. Read Aloud A question that we are often asked is “Should I still read aloud to my child?” There are many reasons that reading aloud is important. It creates a special time for you and your child to enjoy reading together and sets a model for good reading. Reading aloud helps the student develop listening skills and provides a forum for great discussion. In third grade we give homework for several reasons. The primary reason is to have the students reinforce skills that we have been learning in class. It also helps them to practice following directions. Another important aspect of homework is to help students develop responsibility. It also avails parents the opportunity of viewing their children at work. Third graders will get homework three times per week in a variety of academic areas. The children will also be responsible for a monthly reading incentive and a variety of long term assignments throughout the year. Homework should take no longer than 30-40 minutes. The children should also spend a few minutes studying their math facts and spelling words. Parents often ask about how much they should help with homework. A general rule of thumb is to act like “the guide by the side”. Be there to check in with your child and help with directions, but let them complete the assignment the best they can. Please check the homework journal nightly.
