READING TIPS FOR PARENTS
- Read with your child every day and have fun. Discuss the story. You will also be building your child’s vocabulary. Most importantly, you will help your child enjoy reading. A parent’s example is the most powerful teacher of all
- Create a special place to read free from distractions
- Choose books carefully if you are asking your child to read to you. Be patient as you help your child practice reading.
- Take turns. You read a line or a short page. Have your child echo back the page to practice expression and fluency.
- Reread favorites. Read it again and again. This will help build your child’s confidence and help him/her improve.
- Key into your child’s interests. You can have them choose topics that he/she wants to learn more about. You can read books above their instructional level to create an interest and love of books.
- Give positive feedback for the many small improvements your child is making. This will help create confidence and encourage your child to continue to take risks to learn new skills.
