  Welcome to the Music Room!

My name is Catherine Thomson, and I am happy to introduce myself as a new member of the Island Avenue team this year.  As a music teacher, I enjoy integrating Math, Science, History, and English into the music curriculum.  I enjoy using technology in the classroom as a tool to create compositions of our own, as well as to challenge us as we learn about harmony, melody, and rhythm.  We will be traveling around the world and back in time as we learn about the music of different cultures, celebrate holidays and visit the colonial period.

I look forward to integrating science into our music classes for each grade as it is introduced in the classroom.

Grade 1:  Plants, Human Body, Geology

Grade 2: Oceanography, solar system, animals, seasons

Grade 3: International music, plants and animals

Grade 4: Colonial music, plants, and the solar system

Journals:

Each child at Island Avenue attending Grades 1-4 has a music journal.  In addition to our listening, singing, and dancing activities we take time to practice notating the musical alphabet, and the symbols we find in music.  We also draw pictures of the songs that were learning in order to help us remember them.  When the children take their journals home at the end of the year you will see a few examples of the progress we’ve made in music class throughout the year.
